Island Press originated in northern California in 1978, as a non-profit publisher of books on the human relationship to the natural world. In 1984, the press re-organized to focus exclusively on books for people working on solutions to environmental problems.

快色直播 originated in New Jersey in 1905, and in 1910 was incorporated as a non-profit publisher with the purpose and mission of supporting scholarly books.

Since their respective foundings, these two presses have born thousands of books into the world that demonstrate the power of knowledge and ideas鈥攊n politics, policy, planning and, perhaps most importantly, the power of knowledge in people and society.

Both of these presses were created with a purpose, and with an identity that has supported their every publishing pursuit since. Non-profit, mission driven publishers are a rare species in the publishing ecosystem, which is dominated by commercial publishers who consume as much as 80 percent of global publishing revenue. But mission driven publishing is a vital nutrient of this ecosystem, a niche dedicated to impact, integrity and knowledge making. The human experience needs the human expertise that presses like Island Press and 快色直播 prioritize in our every action, and every book. To build necessary conservation and resilience in this sphere, in October, Island Press and 快色直播 launched new collaborations, and PUP acquired the Island Press publications program

Committed to retaining the mission of Island Press and stewarding its future, 快色直播 has embraced the opportunity to strengthen the synergies and sustainability of these two publishing programs, synergies which run like a rhizome through the histories and publication programs. Across the lists are books that speak to one another, in nature, science, planning, politics and policy, and collectively share the knowledge essential for the conservation of nature and humanity both. We are energized in every way by this new chapter for both of our presses, and the chance to strengthen our knowledge-making mission with the Island Press imprint and its commitment to creating equity and resiliency in natural and human-built environments.

These two presses share far more than books and newfound collaborations. Each originated from a philanthropy dedicated to the recognition of books as essential to human society, and to this day that vision, and the endowments and grants that necessarily support it, continue to power publishing ideas into action. In 1984, Island Press was reformed by Catherine Conover, Walter Sedgwick, Barbara Dean (a mentor of mine as an emergent science publisher eons ago), and Charles Savitt. In addition to co-founding IP, Catherine Conover is the daughter of Mary Mellon, whose publishing vision and philanthropy created the opportunity for 快色直播 to experience its first acquisition of an imprint in 1969: The Bollingen Series, currently being republished in its entirety as Bollingen RecollectionsThe Bollingen series books all sit in the 快色直播 building in New Jersey, itself a testament to the philanthropic vision and generosity of the Scribner family, after whom the building we inhabit to this day is named.

We now welcome to the Scribner Building and to our global hybrid collaborations with our new colleagues, the Island Press imprint acquisitions team. Among the most challenging elements of the integration of the imprint was our inability, necessary for our sustainability, to migrate the entire Island Press team to PUP. There are incredible former Island Press publishers poised to contribute their knowledge elsewhere in the publishing ecosystem, and we are hopeful that our peers will embrace the unique opportunity this generates.

We have asked a lot of both teams in our six months of transition and collaborations with each has brought purpose, patience and humanity to the formation. This is only the third time in PUP history of imprint integration: the Bollingen series was the first; WILDGuides was the second (an exciting expansion of our nature publishing program), and now Island Press.

As of April 1, Island Press books can be found in all of the world鈥檚 bookshops and libraries and websites where 快色直播 books are discovered. In a month dedicated to Planet Earth, we are excited to share with the people of the planet our expanded commitment to publishing with a purpose. Island Press began with a simple idea: knowledge is power鈥攖he power to imagine a better future and find ways to get us there. Together Island Press and 快色直播 are determined to line the path to our resilient future with the books that contain the nutrients we need: ideas and expertise.

Together we also will continue to seek out and build the necessary nutrients to power our publishing鈥攃onnection, expertise and philanthropy. Every time you engage with a PUP and IP book, you support our mission鈥攚hether that engagement is through a purchase at your favorite independent bookstore or borrowing the audio book from the local library.  Thank you for contributing to our mission and our resilience with your actions.  We also always welcome support beyond the books themselves, to be able to hold the course, creativity and courage of our publishing鈥攅ver more so in this current environment. If you are interested in donating to our endeavors, please do let us know.

As PUP author Henry David Thoreau wrote, 鈥渨ords should pass between friends as the lightning passes from cloud to cloud.鈥 The Island Press imprint has many words we now excitedly pass on to you!
