I commission books on urban design for the Island Press Imprint. Cities are dynamic and vibrant spaces, and our international list highlights the opportunities and the challenges. Urban design decisions shape our quality of life, including where we live, our mental and physical health, and our social connections. Our books have defined the vanguard of thought and practice concerning the built environment; these include Jan Gehl鈥檚 Cities for People and Timothy Beatley鈥檚 Biophilic City.
I鈥檓 excited to collaborate with authors on ambitious, innovative works for both general interest readers and professionals. I am particularly drawn to books that offer original insights and solutions as well as encourage readers to rethink the ways our cities are structured. Relevant topics include (but are not limited to): housing, urban nature, climate change adaptation, and natural disaster recovery. Across all topics, I am especially interested in publishing works that center racial, economic, and social justice.
Our urban design authors explore the ways that planners, designers, activists, journalists, and scholars can make cities more accessible, welcoming, and resilient places. Some recent urban design book highlights include The Unfinished Metropolis by Benjamin Schneider, Climate Action for Busy People by Cate Mingoya-LaFortune, Bird Brother by Rodney Stotts, and Dream, Play, Build by James Rojas and John Kamp.
