Early modern Europe was a paradise for imaginative genealogists. Great families ransacked archives for evidence that their ancestry stretched back for centuries. Royal and noble houses, newly wealthy merchants and gentry, and ambitious lawyers and civil servants all sought to raise their ranks by claiming ancient nobility. France and Holland were both hotbeds of genealogical invention. Scaliger鈥檚 practices had many parallels in the lives of his friends and benefactors, though none of them matched his creativity.
