The false genealogy of the Scaligers originally rested on standard forms of invented evidence: for example, a lost history by the humanist Paolo Emili, from which Julius Caesar insisted that he had drawn excerpts. As the attacks became more detailed, Joseph became increasingly inventive. Like all the best forgers, he wielded cutting-edge scholarly tools鈥攁nd invented some new ones of his own鈥攖o prove that he and his father were right.
