The publishing industry is experiencing a proliferation of fraudulent communications, powered by AI tools. These include emails impersonating authors submitting new work or editor and publisher queries to prospective authors; agent solicitation emails; book festival, book club, podcast, and conference invitations; and publishing contract offers, to name a few. Some of the organizations that have been subject to scam emails impersonating their staff including the Brooklyn Book Festival, Nantucket Book Festival, Texas Book Festival, Edinburgh International Book Festival, National Book Foundation, Goodreads, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

With an ongoing commitment to trust, integrity, and transparency, we want to make sure that all our publishing partners know that any communication from PUP will only come from one domain: press.princeton.edu. Any email claiming to be from PUP and not using this domain is not legitimate should be approached with caution and flagged as phishing.
These fraudulent and malicious communications are dismaying in the implicit breach of trust and absence of transparency. We encourage all authors, readers, and publishing partners to stay vigilant and deploy the critical thinking skills most necessary in these times. Signs that an email may be a scam include the sender using a Gmail account or other personal email account, rather than email that matches the organization they claim to represent; language describing a book or an author鈥檚 body of work that closely resembles marketing copy or other public language; an excess of platitudes for someone鈥檚 writing or research; an offer to include a book in a book club or book festival, for a fee; or any solicitation of funds directly from an author for marketing services. If you search for the name or an individual or organization soliciting money and no website, LinkedIn account, or other public profile exists 鈥� this is a red flag.
