This volume collects all of Paul Val茅ry鈥檚 major meditations on the theory and practice of poetry. These pieces range from his first essay, 鈥淥n Literary Technique鈥� (1889), to his last, 鈥淰ariations on the Eclogues鈥� (1944). Among them are essays on his own work and that of other poets, on 鈥減ure poetry,鈥� on the speaking of verse, and on the art of translation. In these pieces, Val茅ry focuses on the deliberate formal work of poetry鈥攊n his own poems as well as in those of La Fontaine, Victor Hugo, Baudelaire, Mallarm茅, Rimbaud, and others.
