Paul Val茅ry turned to the discipline of poetry during the First World War, to escape from the 鈥渃ommotion of a world gone mad.鈥� 鈥淚 fashioned myself a poetry,鈥� he wrote, 鈥渢hat had no other law than to establish for me a way of living with myself, for a part of my days.鈥�
