So youve written an academic bookwhat now? It might seem like the hardest part is behind you, but few scholarly writers have the experience in developmental editing that is required to polish a manuscript such that it will connect with publishers and readers. In this video, PUP Speaks speaker and Publishing Consultant Laura Portwood-Stacer takes us through her method for revising a full book manuscript, as laid out in her new book Make Your Manuscript Work: A Guide to Developmental Editing for Scholarly Writers

I cant make writing and editing a book easy - because its just never going to be easy - but I realised I could make the process easier by demystifying it and giving writers a stronger sense of orientation. In this extract from her public workshop, Laura shares some of the feedback she gives most frequently to her clients, and introduces the Manuscript Development Cycle. 

 

Laura Portwood-Stacer is a publishing consultant and developmental editor who helps academic authors at all career stages navigate the book publishing process. Her company Manuscript Works runs workshops and online programs to assist writers around the world in drafting book proposals and connecting with scholarly publishers. Laura is the author of A Guide for Scholarly Authors and Make Your Manuscript Work: A Guide to Developmental Editing for Scholarly Writers. She runs a variety of institutional on topics ranging from how to successfully publish a book based on your dissertation, to how to work with a developmental editor.
